Consul General Cardenas in his welcome remarks thanked the large Filipino community for their warm support for an occasion that was meant to be a simple yet solemn occasion but became an event of momentous outpouring of affection to Ninoy and to his legacy of freedom and democracy.
Visiting
Hawaii State Governor Neil Abercrombie spoke with gratitude in being invited to the celebration. He described Ninoy as a vehicle, a bridge to manifest the hope of the Filipino people and that his name rings out across the world, in the same sentiment as that of Nelson Mandela. Ninoy, for him, embodied the aspirations of the individual, community and the nation and the sure knowledge that he would be treated with respect and dignity. He said that while the remembrance of Ninoy’s death bring tears to his eyes, he also said tonight is when should have great joy in knowing that such a person lives and that such a person set a standard for us!
