June 25 is Filipino Seafarers Day

16 June 2011 - Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Presidential Proclamation No. 183, dated 3 June 2011, entitled "Declaring June 25 of Every Year as the Day of the Filipino Seafarer," issued in support, recognition and gratitude for the Filipino seafarers' contribution to our economy and the country's development and also for demonstrating the best traits of the Filipino seafarer before the global maritime community.

The Philippines is the world's leading supplier of ship crew with over 350,000 sailors, or about 20% of the world's seafarers, manning oil tankers, luxury liners, and passenger vessels worldwide. Filipino seafarers remitted a total of $2.46 billion in 2010.
