31 May 2011. The Philippine Consulate General Honolulu’s Consular Outreach Program, headed by Consul General Leoncio Cardenas, participated in the 42nd Annual Filipino Barrio Fiesta at the Maui War Memorial Complex. The longest-running Filipino Fiesta in the State of Hawaii , the 3-day Annual Fiesta was held on Memorial Day weekend and attended by more than 8,000 Filipinos in Maui . The Barrio Fiesta featured food booths, arts and craft booths, NGOs and the PCGH Consular Outreach booth.
This year’s Barrio Fiesta also featured the Santa Cruzan and Flores De Mayo Procession and the search for Ms. Barrio Fiesta 2011 held in the evening of 27 and 28 May, respectively. During the day, various activities were scheduled, namely the “sungka tournament”, pabitin, talent contests and the Barrio Wear competition.
On 28 May 2011 , the Annual Barrio Fiesta’s Coronation Night was held, with Hon. Allan Arakawa, Mayor of the County of Maui , as the Guest of Honor. Other Guests of Honor at the Coronation night were Hawaii Senate President Shan Tsutsui, Rep. Gilbert Keith Agaran and Maui Filipino Community Council President Mr. Herman Andaya.
The Philippine Chorale, under the musical direction of Consul General Cardenas, delighted the huge crowd of Filipinos of all ages with their rendition of popular Filipino love songs. According to Binhi at Ani President, Ms. Cecille Piros, this year’s annual Fiesta has one of the highest attendance of Filipinos and the community friends. This was also the first time that the Philippine Consulate General Honolulu hosted a booth and participated in the Gala Events of the Fiesta.
